| The Sarod is believed to have originated in Gandhar, Afghanistan. It is a light and small lap instrument which has a very distinctive tone quality and rich sound. The body consists of a hollow circular belly extending into a tapering neck that arches back to end in a peg-box. The front of the belly is covered by parchment and a fingerboard of polish metal. The peg-box is shorter than the fingerboard. The strings are plucked with the plectrum, a triangular piece of coconut shell held between the thumb and the index. In this programme, Ken Zukerman gives us a recital of his own repertoire from the different Gharanas over the years.
